Prespa shelter a unique biodiversity in the Balkan. The meeting of soils based on Granit stone and limestone, around two deep and old tectonic lakes create condition for high diversity. Moreover the human management of the wetland until the late 70s increased this diversity.
Nowaday, although some damages have been done to this richness due mainly to the abandonment of the ancient pastoral and farming practices, and the development of bean monoculture, Prespa still host some highly interesting natural features. Bird lover will specially love here, as it’s quite easy to see some qui rare birds like amongs others: - Great White and Dalmatian Pelicans (Pelecanus crispus / P. onocrotalus)
- Pygmy and great Cormorants (Phalacrocorax pygmaeus / P. carbo)
- Bitterns (Botaurus stellaris / Ixobrychus minutus)
- Water Rails (Rallus aquaticus)
- Great White Egrets and Purple Herons (Ardea alba / A. purpurea)
- Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus)
- Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos)
- Eagle Owls (Bubo bubo)
Prespa is protected under the Ramsar convention as a wetland of international importance, it is a National Park of Greece and a European Important Bird Area as well as being included in Natura2000.
There are a number of walks the visitor can enjoy depending on fitness and time. Visitors to Prespa should remember that it is still a sensitive border area. It is wise to carry a passport or identity card with you if you plan to hike off main roads.
